Allllooooha!!! Family!!

Weather: next week should be getting down into the 70s. feels good!

Rice Fields: so heavy the rice plants are all falling over. some are even starting to be harvested! oh how time flies!

Mosquito Influenza: it has passed for the most part. it left my body a little weak. we went to the chiropractor (Deklerk shimai had a leg problem and the chiropractor is a sister in our ward). After she fixed Deklerk shimai all up she offered to do me too! After going crazy with my neck and back for about 15 minutes she was finished and she said my muscles feel like grandma muscles. Tired and worn out. Haha that was embarrassing, especially because she said Sister Deklerks are perfect, and she has been a missionary longer than me! Anyway, I had the wonderful opportunity to receive a Priesthood blessing last week. It was so simple, and I know it came from God. I was able to receive strength quickly, and my hope and faith were strengthened as well. I am grateful for the Priesthood!

Missionary work: BETTER THAN EVER!!!! This week was quite a stretch with some illness and many cancelled lessons and other things getting in the way, but the Lord, in His great loving mercy, still blessed us more than we could imagine, and things in Yonago are moving along so well!!

      It is impossible to choose favorites, but one investigator I was so happy to meet with last week wasOchiai. She is a friend of some of the members, the mother of two, a bible reader, and she likes meeting with the missionaries! Perfect! This week we met with one of her friends at the church and taught the Plan of Salvation. It was amazing because we shared scriptures and asked questions, and the member basically took care of the rest by sharing her own personal experiences and testimony that connected so well with Ochiai. 

     Since being in Yonago I have learned how powerful missionary work is when the members are involved. I will tell you, it is powerful. And also, it is so enjoyable. With changes that President Welch brought into the mission when he came, we have been focusing more and more on being balanced in our work with investigators, new investigators, less active members, and members. The more we balance the work, the more joy I feel. We spent one afternoon biking around with a 70 year old member visiting less active members. That was a joyful experience!

     Another visit that I thoroughly enjoyed last week was with Eiko. She is a less active member who we have been meeting almost every week since I got here. She has opened up and changed so much since I have gotten here, and I have grown to love her so much! We talk about Joseph a lot. In Japan, they call down syndrome people *Angel* (in English). She has especially taken interest in Joseph. She begged for a picture of him, and before I knew it, it was framed and hanging up on her wall! She said she loves to walk by it because it lights up the whole room when she looks at it. More than anything, Eiko wants to feel loved. She says that in almost every lesson, and I love being able to testify with all of my heart that God loves her more than she can imagine. 

     Sunday was definitely one highlight of the week. The two oldest daughters of the Takekawa family, Nanami and MIsora, came to church!!! A family with daughters the same age picked them up and brought them to church. They seemed to enjoy it so much, and after church, we had a young woman activity (at a members ramen shop...we made sushi!!) and the girls took Nana and Mi right in. It was so wonderful to see! I have high hopes for that family!! 

     Well, family, those are just a few highlights of last week. I wish I could tell you all the ways the Lord is blessing us, but there is just not enough room or time to list it all! I am so humbled to be a part of this work. I have high hopes for the future here in Japan... I know the Lord is with us. I know this is His work and it is hastening!!

Peach and Jana: How is school and work going? You two sound like busy little bees. Keep it up! I love you so much!!

Ty: Thanks for always sending great emails. That was nice of you for sharing  your food with your roommate. Labeling is a good idea though. 

Sarah: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I remember last year telling you you are so old. Well, you are older now! I hope it is a really happy day! Do you have a cross country meet that day? If so, good luck!

Dan: Wow. You are AMAZING. I saw your piano concerto. WOW!!!!!! AMAZING! Ha. Good work! Except please stop getting so tall...

Joe: I saw your costume. It looks fun! How is your tricycle?

Peter and Grandpa: Thank you for sending me letters. I am always so happy to see a letter waiting for me!

A lady I'm teaching fell in love with Joseph and framed his picture!

Dearest Family,

How are you?? Japan is great. It is the season of pears. The persimmon trees are also starting to get some fruit on them. Yay. I have seen the rice fields go from nothing to big plots of water to little sprouts and now they are all full and laying over from all the heavy rice! It is an exciting time to be here! Oh also there is a big influenza going around Japan from mosquito bites. I got bit all over my legs last week when I was weeding a strawberry field, and now I have a horrible nasty sinus/ head explosion type of sickness. I hope I do not die. 

Other than that, all is well here in Yonago! I will be here for at least one more transfer! The longest I have ever been in an area, and I am so excited! I LOVE IT here!!! I am beginning to be good friends with the old grandpas and grandmas riding their bikes down the streets and the young school kids who walk by us and say *hello!* all the time. The ward members are also people who I am coming to rely on like family. And my dear companion DeKlerk shimai...I just love her! She knows and understands me well and she is pushing me to be better than I thought I could be! 

I do not even know where to begin with talking about the investigators. 

The Takekawa family gets so excited every time we come to visit. And when they are excited, they are crazy!! The little boys run around and climb up the walls and do karate with each other...it is so crazy!! But the parents are really sincere people and so grateful for the missionaries. They are struggling with money and food, but the ward is amazing and has really come to their aid. Last week the bishop, relief society president, and another family all visited at different times offering food and help! I love the church.

Pat is doing great. We sat down with her this week to *speak English.* We told her we had a gift for her, so we put a box in front of her. We said inside the box was the most precious, valuable thing. We said it was so important to us. She opened the box and there was a mirror inside. She just stared. And stared. And stared. Then we sang *Be Still My Soul* for her and shared a scripture, and she stared at those words. Then back at the mirror. Then at the words. It was powerful. For somebody who says she will meet with us to speak english but not to talk about religion, I consider it a privilege to experience such spiritual moments with her. 

I missed out on a lot of the lessons last week because I was in Kobe on Monday and Tuesday and Kurayoshi all day on Friday and Saturday, but they seem to be progressing well, and I am excited to spend another transfer with all of them! 

One thing I am so grateful for is the tender mercies of the Lord. I feel like we are constantly being guided to the right place at the right time. We are constantly having words and thoughts put into our head. We are constantly having things fall into place and people come our way just when the timing is perfect! The Lord is aware of each one of His children, and He has the world in His hands. 

Well, fam, sorry the letter is short. I hope you all know how special you are to me! I love hearing from you each week. I am so grateful for everything you have taught me. I feel your support and love. I love you so much!!

What Joy--なんという喜び

Dear Family,

Knee-how! Gain key desk ah? Happy Labor Day. I am celebrating my Labor Day by sleeping today. We having been working ourselves to the bone and I LOVE it!! And the Lord is blessing us WAY more than we deserve. 

    The mission is amazing. There are so many times when the Lord completely guides our thoughts and steps. This week, it brought me to the point of amazement on multiple occasions. For example one night a lesson was cancelled, so we decided to go visit some potential investigators, but before we got to that apartment, I took interest in a really CUTE apartment. I had to go house it. So we stopped, got off our bikes, prayed, and when we looked up, one of the doors opened. It was a young woman and she just asked, *who are you?* We talked to her, and she had so much interest! She is a very religious person already, and she has heard of the mormon church, and she was more than willing to have us visit her again! 

     Another day, we were out searching for a less active members home. We were lost. Yay for Japanese streets. We have an investigator who is very difficult to contact and she never seems to be available for a lesson. While we were looking around and checking our map, she rode her bicycle right by us! She stopped and asked if she could help us. Then we talked with her and set up an appointment for a lesson! 

     Another day, we were visiting less active members. When planning, we looked at the map and they seemed to all live in the same area. We put each name into our GPS and then planned on visiting them one at a time. As we were visiting, we put a name in our GPS that took us pretty far away. We did not think much of it, we just went. The man was home, he let us right in, he was so grateful for a visit from the missionaries, and he asked us to please come back. We thought that was great guidance from God and we went back to the area we were before to finish the names. That night during planning, we realized we entered the completely wrong name into our GPS and that is why he was so far away. I love it when the Lord works with our mistakes to accomplish His work. 

     One investigator who is SO enjoyable to work with is Pat. She is the person who has been coming to Eikaiwa for decades. She said she would meet with us to speak English, on account that we do not speak religion. We are missionaries though. So we met with her and had a lesson about God and Jesus Christ. We thought she would not meet again, but we called just in case, and she set up an appointment! She said it is okay as long as there is not *serious talk*. We talked religion. She really opens up with us. She is searching for purpose and meaning in life. She wants hope. So we talked about religion even more. Then, we thought for sure she would be against meeting again, but she willingly set up another appointment! She also called us Saturday night (we were SO tired and hungry!) and said she had a loaf of bread for us, so we met up with her on the street and talked for a while. She is so fun. We do not know her real name yet. That is our next goal! 

     We had powerful lessons last week. We focused a lot on sharing the message of the Restoration. I feel like that is a lesson that does not get taught enough in this land of Buddha and shrines. But that is the reason we are here! And the Spirit definitely is present as we teach the message of the Restoration. My favorite part is sharing the first vision. This week we were sharing it with Sister Ochiai and her daughter and son. She has been studying the Bible and many other religious books, so she was very interested in hearing about prophets/apostasy/ etc. Her kids were not that interested. But then as we shared the first vision they all looked up and just stared at us. Afterward, the Spirit was powerful and Ochiai shimai expressed her gratitude for meeting with us and giving her the Book of Mormon as a present because she feels like it is an answer to all of her questions. 

     In addition to these amazing experiences, another part of my mission that I LOVE right now is the Yonago ward. (p.s. there is a Yonago ward facebook page with a lot of pictures. It is in Japanese, but maybe you could find it!) I know the Lord is letting me be in Yonago for a reason. I have probably said this before, but I feel like Yonago is the Idaho Falls of Japan, and I LOVE it. The ward members especially!! Yesterday in church the youth did the musical number. It was 2 cellos, 2 violas, a violin, and about 15 singers. I was basking in heaven. I played the violin the week before with the bishops family singing.  Also, on Saturday we attended the second day of the ward campout. We had a mini sports festival, and it was a BLAST! I just love every minute we spend with the ward. I have never felt more love for any people than I do now for the people in Yonago. 

     More than anything, I love the Lord. He is our Savior. He is perfect. He has all knowledge and power. He lives now! Through Him we can find the most comfort, strength, and joy. I am so grateful to be a missionary right now...I get to testify about Him every day! 

    Also, never forget that I love you! More than you could believe probably. I love you lots!!

TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL THINE HEART

Dear Family, 

Sometimes I sit back in awe as I see the Lords involvement in the work here in Yonago. Amazing things have been happening!! 

     I do not even know where to begin!I could spend forever just writing about Tuesday. We had 5 appointments, and they were all pretty spread out across our area, so we worked HARD. The appointments were great! The first one was with Ochiai, who is a member referral. She is a mother who grew up studying the bible with her father and has recently picked it up again after he passed away. She wants to understand how she can relate all the things she learns into her life so she can become more like Christ. So prepared! And she is so blessed to be meeting with the LDS missionaries! We had a powerful lesson about Gods love and prayer in which she taught herself everything. Her 10 year old daughter walked into the room and she had interest in who God is, then wanted to learn how to pray, and now the family is praying together!

      We biked like crazy after that lesson to get to our lesson with SIster Nakada. She is a less active member, and she told us how grateful she is to be meeting with the missionaries because she wants to come back to church! She got baptized when she was young for the activities, so she does not know any of the doctrine, but she wants to learn. She had so many questions and when we opened up the Book of Mormon for her, she just ate it up. She was so impacted when she learned of Jesus Christs love for her. It was a great lesson! We ran to 3 other great lessons that day and we were so pooped by the end of the night! Wednesday and Thursday were much the same...the Lord opened up the way for us to teach so many lessons last week and they were great! I learn so much from all of our investigators. 

     One of my favorite investigators right now is Brother Dateyama. He is changing. Last week in the lesson, instead of saying the typical *i can not be baptized* he said that when he feels ready, he will be baptized! It was a great lesson and we all walked out of that lesson with lots of hope! On Sunday, the ward members were commenting to us on the change in him. They all said that he looks so bright now, and it is true. He is coming close to Christ and it shows. This work is amazing! 

     The biggest learning experience for me last week was on exchanges with Sister Watkins. This time, she and I came to Yonago, and it was the 2 of us working together. We had 2 great lessons on Friday, but when we did not have lessons, I had no idea what to do. It was so weird for me. Usually I have a whole list of things we should be doing, and if not, I usually feel guided to know what to do next, but on Friday, I had nothing. I felt more pressure than normal because I was supposed to be training, but I had no idea what to do. We did some housing and streeting and visited a few potential investigatorss, but again planning that night, I still felt like I had no idea what to do, and Sister Watkins was just visiting the area, so she knew nothing. The next morning, I was still praying about what to do, and I thought of a less active members name. So we visited that person. She was not home. But there was a nearby member who we decided to visit, and she needed us. She told us of struggles she had had with cancer, and how she was feeling so low that morning, and she was so grateful for a visit from the sister missionaries. After that, we did not have much time, so we were biking back to the apartment, but the name of a former investigator came to my mind. Even though we were short on time, I turned around and we visited her. She was SO excited to see us! She let us right in and we were able to have a lesson on the spot with her! She asked us to come back again and she became a new investigator! We missed our train, but it was so worth it. The Lord led us right to her! After a long week full of lessons and spiritual experiences, the Lord threw one more in for me and it taught me a great lesson. He is in charge. He knows exactly what we are going through. He will guide us. What do we have to do? Trust. Thanks to Grandpa Vance, Proverbs 3:5-6 is ingrained into my head. I know that the promise in that scripture is true. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

The power and authority given to missionaries is real. That was made clear to me over and over this last week. 

Monday: We taught Ayako chan. Ayako chan has received all the lessons, so now we are meeting her to help strengthen her faith and do things so she can get permission from her parents for baptism. Because the doctrine has been drilled in her mind over and over, we sat down with her on Monday just to talk. We asked about her life and about the church, and questions and words started coming out of our mouth. I am not sure what happened, but the Spirit was in that room more than ever before with Ayako chan. She felt it and we felt it and it was great! 

Tuesday: We met with a former investigator named Miki. Miki has a LOT of problems in her life. She is 22, but her life is 100% different than mine. We sat down to talk with her and she opened her heart and told us SO MUCH. To be honest, I did not know much how to help because I could not relate to her situation at all, but as I testified, words came to my mouth. Then a scripture came to my mind, then we were able to pray, then she agreed to meet with us again (even though she is known for never making return appointments). That was all the Spirit. 

We also met with an Eikaiwa student. I am so excited to tell you about her. Her name is Pat. She has been coming to Eikaiwa for decades. We did not have Eikaiwa last week because of a conference in Okayama the next day, so we called Pat to tell her, and then we asked if she would meet with us on another day. She talked for about 5 minutes about how busy she is, told us it is IMPOSSIBLE for her to talk about religion, and then scheduled an appointment to meet. When we sat down with her, she also began to open her heart to us. She told us all about her experience with the missionaries in the past, her concerns about life right now, her beliefs and her desires. We had a very spiritual oasis lesson about Gods love and ended up talking about religion for an hour! That was the Spirit. 

Wednesday: We went to Yonago station, got off our bikes, about 30 seconds later began talking to somebody, and about a minute after that, she also opened her heart to us. She told us that her husband died and she was miserable and she just wanted hope and answers to where he is now. We testified of the Plan of Salvation and she was so touched. That was all the Spirit. 

We hopped on a train that night to visit a less active member who lives super far away, and our previous investigators, the Utagawa family, were on the same train! They were so excited to see us and begged us to come back and visit them! That was the Spirit.

Thursday: At 6:36 am, after praying, I texted Utagawa family and asked if we could visit that day. We did, and the lesson was AMAZING. One reason the family was dropped before (among many reasons) is because the lesson was always full of contention and we could never feel the Spirit. But on the Thursday, something changed and the Spirit was powerful. Even Utagawa san felt it. She was rubbing her arms saying *whoa is that the Spirit?* Yes. It was the Spirit. 

Friday: We were in Okayama for Zone Conference. It was the first one with the new mission president, and I loved it! As we talked together as missionaries, I could feel the power in the room and the power behind the scriptures we were reading and the power behind testimonies that were shared. This is the Lords work. And I felt the Spirit. 

Saturday: We met with less active members who we have been running into so many times but were never able to set up an appointment with. We set up an appointment with them! Yay! Guided by the Spirit. 

Sunday: We had church! Yay! It felt like it had been a long time. 2 weeks could seem like years as a missionary. Last night we were visiting less active members. A lot of them were home, which was great, and we met some people with potential. However, we were in one area and we thought of a less active member who we wanted to visit who lived in a completely different area. We had never met her, but we decided to go try. She was home! Yay! She was not interested in talking to missionaries and has no desire to come back to church. However, before we left, I told her that as missionaries, the only thing we want to do is remind her that she is loved. When I said that, she began crying. She continued to cry. She stood there and cried. Then she bawled. The Spirit prompted those words to come out of my mouth. 

Speaking of those words, love is something I have been thinking a lot about this last week. Our investigators all seemed to be telling us so much about their lives last week, and they have HARD lives. Sometimes I sat in the lesson with tears in my eyes because I could not believe how hard their lives are. As I thought about how to help the investigators here, I felt that Christs love is what will heal and strengthen them. Christs love is infinite and matchless. Christs love is what allows suffering to become rejoicing. Christs love is what I pray for every day and what I want to share with the people here! 

I hope you all know that you are loved. You are loved way more than you know! Also, you are loved by somebody way over here in Japan, way more than you know!! Thank you for being the best family in the world!!

HOPE--希望

My first Japanese festival

I absolutely LOVE this family!

Dear Family,

Shout out: dearest Vonald. Happy happy happy birthday! You deserve the best! Save some german chocolate cake for me! 

     Family, there is nothing better than missionary work!! I am so grateful to be here at this time. Last week, A LOT happened. Because Tojo shimai was being transfered, so many people wanted to say goodbye to her. We met with almost all of our investigators, had more meal appointments than I even want to think about, and biked all over Yonago over and over each day! It was an adventure!! As we met with our investigators and ward members, I realized we are in such a strong area. I am so blessed to be working with people who prepared by God to be with me at this time. 

     One example is the Takekawa family. I talk about them all the time, because they are amazing. We visited them a couple times last week. The family is reading the Book of Mormon and praying now! The kids really are the best. The seven year old boy, Seiya kun, told us he has been reading the Book of Mormon on his own each day! We found out the mother has been searching about our church online. At first we were concerned, because many strong investigators drop the missionaries after finding anti-mormon things online. However, we found out she was led right to mormon.org, she read great things about the church in Ukraine (where her family is), and now her interest is even stronger! The ward members also love Takekawa family and are willing to do anything to help them. 

We also met with less active members who are praying again every day for the first time in years and years. It was a good experience to meet with many great people and see the changes that have happened in Yonago for the last two transfers. 

     I expect many more changes to be happening in the next transfer. Deklerk shimai is such a strong missionary! She is a goof--she is blonde. She loves pink. She loves somebody named Nate. She loves diets. She loves dancing (professionally!) She loves country music. She loves joking around. BUT she has a firm trust in the Lord, she expects miracles, and she gives every last part of herself to the work. She saw 4 baptisms last month. She also is planning on having baptisms happen here in Yonago. She is a strong, bold missionary, but at the same time so humble and trusting. I just have to say, I am beyond excited. I loved being with Tojo shimai and I learned a lot from her, but I feel like Deklerk shimai is just what Yonago needs and just who I need at this time. 

    Deklerk shimai also loves being clean. The first thing she did when she got to our apartment was pull out the garbage bags and begin throwing things away. Six HUGE garbage bags later, she decided that it was decent enough to finish the rest on preparation day. She also loves working out. She killed me with 5 minute planks and 5 minute wall sits and 50 push ups on Saturday. Then today she took me on a run to the beach and killed me again after 7 miles! Ha she is going to lift me up physically and spiritually. I am excited! 

     The first thing Deklerk shimai and I did when we got together (after she went through our apartment and threw away so much) was visit the Bishop. He was not home, but we had a great conversation with his wife and got invited over for dinner. Yesterday after dinner, we had a testimony meeting with the Bishops family. He has 8 kids, 5 living at home right now. We turned off all the lights, and as each of us bore our testimonies, we lit a candle. At the end, each person of the family had born his/her testimony, the room was lit up, and the Spirit was so strong. I think it was really good to give the children a chance to bear their testimonies in their home, but my favorite thing was seeing the parents faces. Bishop and his wife seemed to be SO touched and SO grateful. My vision of what it means to strengthen the ward was expanded a lot last night. As scared as the ward must have been when they saw two crazy blonde girls together who love the color pink and eating watermelon and have only half way decent Japanese, I think they will begin to be grateful for the missionaries. We want to do everything we can to help and strengthen the ward members. 

      Along with some new adventures last week (like eating cow hormone and attending a Japanese festival), I felt a new sense of hope. This is the Lords work. He loves His children so much. He is in charge. His Spirit is POWERFUL. I LOVE the work!

 I love you so much!
TRANSFERS. I am staying in Yonago! Yippee!! But Tojo shimai is leaving. :(  It is so sad...I love her to pieces and I have learned SO SO much from her! DeKlerk shimai will be my new companion. She has been in the mission for almost the same time as me. This is her first transfer as a sister training leader. She has been in the same area for almost a year now, so Yonago will definitely be something new for her! All I really know about her is that she is a good dancer, she likes to run, and she has helped more people than my fingers can count to be baptized during her mission. I am excited for the new adventure! 

We were able to go on exchanges with the Kurayoshi sisters last week. I worked with Zamani shimai, and I was SO impressed with her!  She is on her first transfer, and she has so much dendo fire. She has had barely any experience at all street contacting or housing or speaking Japanese in lessons (her trainer always did it for her), so I pushed her quite a bit on the exchange, and we had a blast together! I learned a lot from her and I hope she learned a few things from me too. 

Things have also been going well in Yonago. The Takekawa family is praying together every day! AND. The kids are the ones who initiate it...the Lord keeps preparing them younger and younger! They showed really strong interest in the Book of Mormon last time we met, so tonight when we visit them we will be teaching them about the Book of Mormon. I am so excited, because you know what the Book of Mormon can do to help in conversion! 

We had a great lesson with Ayako chan on Tuesday. She texted us randomly and said she wanted to meet. We did not have any lesson prepared for her because we had just taught her on Monday, and we had two lessons in a row before hers, so we had no time to prepare. Tojo shimai asked me to take charge of the lesson and she would fill in the gaps that I missed. The Lord stepped in and it ended up being one of the best lessons we have had with Ayako chan. We talked about the road after baptism and the happiness that comes from ordinances, and her desire seemed stronger than ever. Last step: parents permission! 

Speaking of parents permission...do you remember Arisa chan from Mikunigaoka? She is the 19 year old girl who we met who was a GOLDEN investigator. Well, she turned 20 last week and she was BAPTIZED!!!! Yay!!!! Now out of all the people I taught in Mikunigaoka, Matsuzaki kyoudai, Mai chan, Masumoto shimai, Deguchi kyoudai, and Arisa chan have been baptized! And more are on the way. It is great to see results of people I prayed and worked for so much almost a year ago. 

I hope to continue to help people here in Yonago. It will be different doing things without Tojo shimai...it is nice having somebody who understands investigators and who knows how to get what needs to be done done. But I know this is the Lords work and it is continuing on at full speed! I am excited to be so immersed in the work for this short time!

Pops: How are you?? It sounds like you have had quite the adventurous summer. If you want to have an even more adventurous winter, you should come to Japan. There is a nice ski resort about 40 minutes away from me.  

Mums: Congrats on your hard work at the tennis tournament. Your pussy, bloody toes create a fabulous image in my mind. Dont you just love the pictures of Japanese kids?? I am so lucky to be in Yonago!

Jas: Did you make it to Georgia? How was the ride?

Peach and Jan: How is school? People just love looking and your pictures. They are convinced I just took pictures from a magazine of celebrities. Is it true that you might move to Texas?

Dan: Thanks for the email! Japan is great! Yonago is the 2nd hottest place in Japan apparently. I love it. Did you know the school kids have less than a month for summer vacation here? Sad huh! I love you!!

Joe: Why do you want a 3 wheel bike? In Japan, only the 100 year olds ride that bike because they can not do it with just 2 wheels. But the down syndrome people ride 2 wheel bikes. Just so you know. Also down syndrome Asian people and American people look the same. I love you!!
